Senior Stress

BY CODY BENJAMIN AND JOHN ANDERSON, Winter 2019

What is the most common feeling for seniors? Surprisingly, it’s not the joy of only having eight months of high school left. It’s stress. Seniors are feeling very stressed about the school year, and it’s really making them worry and freak out. But what is making them so stressed out?

“Probably, uh, choosing a school and how to pay for it,” said Thomas Meza. “It’s [the school year] stressful because I don’t know where I want to go and I don’t know how I’m going to pay for it.” This year seems to be the worst one in terms of stress for Thomas. “It got progressively more stressful the further along things went.” Thomas seems to think his stress won’t last too much longer. “I think the stress will calm down after college.”

Trent Braun had a bit more to say about the matter. He said the most stressful thing is “Being required to endure high school affairs while simultaneously being pressured to apply to college with hardly any time to spare.” Trent says that school takes away a lot of his free time too. “[It’s stressing me out] because it takes up a lot of my time and I don’t have the time to prepare for college the way I would like to.” He also believes that he’s been the same level of stressed throughout high school.  “Equally stressed I guess. Just in a different way. Different aspects.” Like Thomas, Trent feels that he won’t be stressing out for that much longer. “It’s not learning what I want that gets on my nerves, and having obligations to things that I feel are pointless.”

Torie Angel is also stressed about paying and going to college. “College is super expensive and I’m not sure where I’m going yet, and it’s a long process.” Torie had a lot to say about resized_20190104_123143stress throughout high school as well. “My freshman/sophomore year I wasn’t stressed, those were the easier years, and junior year was way more stressful because I took way harder classes and it was hard to keep up with them.” Torie also had a very unique remark about college making the stress go away. “I think it will be a different kind of stress. I think the stress level will probably be heightened, but I will feel more confident about it.”

Seniors are feeling very stressed out, and they all have the reasoning in common. The final year of high school isn’t the “laid back, not-having-to-do-anything-because-I’m-a-senior” year that everybody hopes and dreams of; It’s the complete opposite. “I’m pretty stressed out,” remarked Torie Angel.
